Yutong Completes 1,550km All-Electric Arterial Route Crossing in South Africa, Setting African Industry Milestone for 12-Metre Pure Electric Coaches
Yutong’s ZK6125BEV pure electric coach pulled into Cape Town, South Africa smoothly on 26 March 2026, marking the successful completion of the 1,550km all-electric crossing challenge from Johannesburg to Cape Town with a full-size electric coach. This is the first time a 12-metre full-size pure electric coach has completed a full zero-emission journey along a core national arterial route on the African continent, setting a brand-new milestone in the green transition of Africa’s commercial vehicle industry.

The entire crossing lasted 3 days and 2 nights, fully led and orchestrated by the Yutong team, who took charge of end-to-end route planning, real-time vehicle status monitoring, and technical emergency response, working in collaboration with GRID CARS to develop the route-wide charging solution and coordinate 7 charging stops along the journey. Leveraging its deep technical expertise in pure electric commercial vehicles and comprehensive all-scenario emergency response protocols, Yutong’s technical team worked on-site with its local partner to overcome all kinds of unexpected conditions, ensuring the steady and smooth progress of the crossing.
In the most demanding leg of the journey, the team took on a 170km continuous arterial highway stretch with only 42% battery charge remaining. Yutong’s technical team conducted real-time, continuous calculation of the vehicle’s energy consumption, dynamically optimised driving strategies, and pre-commissioned the full charging process at the next stop in advance. Finally, the Yutong ZK6125BEV pure electric coach arrived at the station safely with 12% battery remaining and completed charging seamlessly, fully validating the vehicle’s exceptional energy efficiency, outstanding long-range reliability, and robust adaptability to complex road conditions.

The successful completion of this crossing has not only completely shattered the long-standing industry stereotype that full-size pure electric coaches are only suitable for short urban operations, but also completed full working condition validation of commercial vehicle charging scenarios on South Africa’s national arterial highways, laying a solid practical foundation for the large-scale application of pure electric commercial vehicles in long-distance arterial route scenarios across Africa.
The development of green mobility is never a solo endeavour – only deep vehicle-charger integration can deliver stable and long-term progress. As a global leading commercial vehicle manufacturer, Yutong has been deeply rooted in the African market for many years, and has consistently driven the green and low-carbon transition of Africa’s transport sector with locally tailored products and integrated solutions. Moving forward, Yutong will continue to work hand-in-hand with high-quality local partners to continuously improve the high-power commercial vehicle charging network along South Africa’s arterial routes, build safer, more efficient and locally adapted integrated green transport solutions for the African market, and support the continuous advancement of the green mobility sector across the African continent.
A green long march, powered by seamless vehicle-charger collaboration.
